But how exactly will this mode work? Well, it's a bit more complex than the DRS. The FIA has outlined a detailed plan, using the maximum electrical DC power of the energy recovery system (ERS-K) to provide an energy boost. The Technical Regulations (Article C.5.2.8) explain the power output equation, which is dependent on the car's speed.
For a standard car, the ERS-K power output starts to taper off at around 290kph. However, for cars in overtake mode, the power output is significantly higher, allowing them to maintain a higher speed and gain an advantage. The FIA has the authority to adjust the maximum power output to ensure the cars' speeds are compatible with each circuit's design. Overtake mode will not be active on the first lap of a Grand Prix, and it will be enabled after the leader and all cars pass the detection point for the first time.
