Even Prince was such a fan that he wrote her fan mail. However, it seems Don Henley, a member of the Eagles, is not on her list of admirers.
Despite the Eagles forming years after Mitchell's rise to prominence, they undoubtedly influenced each other's writing styles. Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey acknowledged this in 1974, stating, 'Christ knows Joni Mitchell has been an inspiration.' In fact, it's rumored that Mitchell wrote her song 'Help Me' about Frey, reflecting the realization that their relationship was doomed.
So, what happened when she met Don Henley?
In an interview with Mojo in 1994, Mitchell shared a humorous anecdote about her encounter with Henley. She explained, 'I don't like ragging on people and making them look bad. This makes Henley look kinda like a jerk, but shall I tell you it anyway? OK, to me, this is kind of funny.'
Despite her initial hesitation, Mitchell recalled a strange moment one night after attending a Sting concert with her friend and musical partner, Vinnie Coluita. The evening was magnificent, but backstage, a different story unfolded.
Mitchell's mood soured when she saw Coluita playing alone without anyone beside him, leading him to take frequent smoking breaks. She arrived first at the afterparty, feeling cranky. Approaching Henley, who was sitting alone, she was met with a worried facial expression, signaling that he was waiting for Sting.
Mitchell's casual comment about it didn't sit well with Henley, who seemed to be waiting exclusively for Sting. When Sting finally arrived, Mitchell's frustration intensified. She launched herself into the air, yelling at Henley, 'Never!'
Mitchell's disdain for stardom and celebrity culture is well-known. She views these notions as pretenses and those who indulge in them as fools. She even described celebrity culture as 'the enemy of art,' adding, 'Political lamination, frankly, gags me with a spoon.'
Her art, therefore, remains authentic, free from falsities, and focused on what truly matters. Her willingness to stand up for her convictions speaks volumes about her pioneering spirit.
With this stern outlook, she even bashed Bob Dylan as a pretender, stating, 'Bob is not authentic at all. He's a plagiarist, and his name and voice are fake. Everything about Bob is a deception.'
If sincerity is what she values, then it's no wonder that Henley's snub rubbed her the wrong way, and she snapped back in front of a puzzled Sting.
