New Law Prohibits Handheld Phone Use While Driving in Louisiana
Baton Rouge, Louisiana - A groundbreaking law prohibiting the use of cell phones while driving is now fully enforced, marking a significant step towards enhancing road safety in the state.
The law strictly limits phone usage to hands-free voice calls, navigation, and emergencies while driving. This means that drivers can no longer hold their phones, a common sight on Louisiana roads.
The bill's primary author, State Representative Brian Glorioso (R-Slidell), has been instrumental in this legislative achievement. Mandie Landry (D-New Orleans), another key figure in the bill's creation, shared that the effort to pass this law has been a long-standing endeavor, taking five to six years to finally come to fruition.
Landry emphasized the importance of the law, citing Louisiana's high traffic fatality rate. According to data from the Center for Analytics and Research in Transportation Safety, 753 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes in 2024 alone.
The law's impact extends beyond just the use of phones. Landry highlighted various factors contributing to the high accident rates, including inadequate road safety features and a significant portion of the population being uninsured.
The penalty for violating the law is $100 if the offense occurs outside of a school or construction zone, and $250 if it does. However, if a person is involved in a crash at the time of the violation, the fine can be doubled.
Many drivers express support for the new law, believing it will reduce texting and driving, and improve concentration. Residents like Caroline Alberstadt from St. Francisville and Andon Brabham from Baton Rouge appreciate the law's focus on enhancing road safety.
Officials strongly recommend using hands-free devices such as CarPlay or Bluetooth to comply with the law and stay safe while driving. Judges also have the discretion to reduce fines in exchange for community service, offering an alternative to monetary penalties.
