Measles Alert in Sydney: What You Need to Know Now

Sydney residents, take note: a new measles alert has been issued by NSW Health, and it’s something you can’t afford to ignore. But here’s where it gets controversial: while measles is a vaccine-preventable disease, recent cases suggest that not everyone is up to date with their immunizations. Could this be a wake-up call for the community? Let’s dive in.

NSW Health has confirmed two new cases of measles in Sydney, one of which was acquired locally, while the other was linked to recent travel from South-East Asia. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in NSW to 10 since 1 January 2026, signaling an increased risk of infection. And this is the part most people miss: even if you’ve been vaccinated, it’s crucial to stay vigilant, as no vaccine is 100% foolproof, and immunity can wane over time.

If you’ve visited any of the following locations during the specified times, you should monitor yourself closely for symptoms of measles. While these locations no longer pose an ongoing risk, they were potential exposure sites:

  • Saturday, 31 January 2026:

    • Granville Swim Centre, Granville (9:00am–10:30am)
    • St Patrick's Cathedral, Parramatta (6:00pm–7:30pm)
  • Tuesday, 3 February 2026:

    • Woolworths, Granville (3:55pm–4:45pm)
    • Medicines R Us, Gregory Hills (2:25pm–3:15pm)
  • Friday, 6 February to Saturday, 7 February 2026:

    • Westmead Hospital Emergency Department (9:30am on 6 February to 11:30am on 7 February)

A particularly notable exposure site is a coffee shop co-located with Burwood Urgent Care Clinic at 8 Elsie St, Burwood, where a previous case was present on 22 January 2026 between 8:00am and 10:00am. If you were in the Elsie Suites building during this time and have since developed symptoms, it’s imperative to seek testing immediately.

Dr. Conrad Moreira, Director of Public Health for Western Sydney Local Health District, emphasizes the importance of symptom awareness. “If you develop early symptoms like fever, runny nose, sore eyes, or a cough—especially if followed by a red, blotchy rash—and you’ve been to any of these locations, see your doctor or visit an emergency department. But don’t just walk in! Call ahead to avoid exposing others in waiting rooms,” Dr. Moreira advises.

Measles is highly contagious, spreading through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The good news? It’s entirely preventable with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is safe, effective, and free for children at 12 and 18 months of age. In NSW, it’s also free for anyone born after 1965 who hasn’t had two doses. Here’s a thought-provoking question: With measles outbreaks occurring globally, is your vaccination status travel-ready?

If you’re unsure whether you’ve had two doses, it’s better to get vaccinated again—additional doses are safe. This is especially critical before traveling. The MMR vaccine is available from GPs for all ages and pharmacies for those over 5 years old. For children under 12 months traveling overseas, a dose can be given from six months of age, but consult your GP first.

Now, here’s the big question: Are we doing enough as a community to prevent the spread of measles? Share your thoughts in the comments below—let’s start a conversation that could save lives.
