Nurse Shares Emotional Mastectomy Journey: 'I Wasn’t Ready' | Breast Cancer Story (2026)

A nurse's harrowing account of her cancer journey and the unexpected challenges of a mastectomy

A nurse from the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent, has revealed the emotional and physical toll of her cancer diagnosis and subsequent mastectomy. Kerry Noble, a theatre coordinator and senior sister, shared her story, highlighting the anxiety and vulnerability she felt despite her experience in the hospital setting.

Ms. Noble's journey began with a routine mammogram in 2023, which led to a diagnosis of breast cancer just days before her mother's funeral. The diagnosis was a shock, but it was the mastectomy that truly tested her resilience. She described the experience as overwhelming, even for someone who had witnessed countless surgeries during her career.

'I was anxious about being so vulnerable in front of my colleagues,' she said. 'But they were fantastic and really looked after me.'

Her family history played a significant role, as she had a strong genetic predisposition to breast cancer, with four out of five of her aunts having battled and lost the disease. Despite the challenges, Ms. Noble's colleagues were her rock, providing support and assistance with daily tasks during her recovery.

'Without them all, I wouldn't have coped,' she said. 'My motto is one day at a time, and that's exactly what I did.'

The mastectomy was followed by a period of adjustment, both physically and professionally. Ms. Noble took eight months off work, during which she had to adapt her role to accommodate the side effects of her treatment. She has since returned to work, sharing her experiences to provide support and comfort to others facing similar struggles.

'I have been very open about my journey,' she said. 'People will come and talk to me about their own worries or something a family member is going through, and I'm always happy to listen and share my own experiences.'

Despite the difficulties, Ms. Noble's story is one of resilience and hope. She now has a new grandson to cherish and a renewed sense of purpose, looking forward to new adventures.
