The outage struck shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday and initially impacted a large section of northern San Francisco. At its most severe, the blackout affected approximately one-third of Pacific Gas and Electric Company's (PG&E) customers in the area.
Local media outlets and social media platforms buzzed with reports of numerous restaurants and shops shutting their doors, streetlights and festive Christmas decorations going dark, all occurring on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to alert the public about "significant transit disruptions" throughout the city, recommending that residents avoid nonessential travel and treat any nonworking traffic signals as four-way stops. Notably, Waymo, the company behind driverless ride-hailing services, decided to suspend its operations during this crisis. A video circulating on social media even captured a Waymo vehicle idling at an intersection, highlighting the chaos.
Authorities later identified that some of the outages stemmed from a fire at a PG&E substation located at the intersection of 8th and Mission streets, with fire officials sharing updates on X around 3:15 p.m. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. By around 4 p.m., PG&E announced via X that they had stabilized the electric grid and did not anticipate any further outages.
