Facing a significant legal hurdle, filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife, Shwetambari Bhatt, have been denied bail for the second time in a high-profile fraud case. This case, involving an alleged Rs 30 crore scam, has captured public attention, raising questions about the couple's involvement and the intricacies of the accusations.
The Udaipur court's decision, handed down on December 24, represents a further setback for the Bhatts. This follows an earlier denial on December 16, when they sought interim bail citing medical grounds. The court's primary concern revolves around the ongoing and sensitive nature of the investigation. The authorities are still meticulously examining financial documents, contractual agreements, and the movement of funds related to the case. The judge emphasized that granting bail at this stage could potentially impede the investigation, particularly given the scale of the alleged fraud.
But here's where it gets controversial... The court's reasoning suggests that the investigation is far from over, with the possibility of further arrests and extensive questioning. This implies that the authorities believe there are more individuals connected to the case who may be summoned or questioned as the inquiry progresses.
The initial bail application, filed on December 16, requested temporary relief for medical treatment. Advocate Manzoor Hussain explained that the application sought interim bail for a brief period to allow the couple to receive necessary medical care.
What is the case about?
The case originates from a complaint filed by Dr. Ajay Murdia, a businessman based in Udaipur. He alleges that he invested nearly Rs 30 crore with Vikram Bhatt for the production of several films, including a biopic about his late wife, Indira. The investigation has already resulted in multiple arrests, including co-producer Mehboob Ansari and a vendor named Sandeep, prior to the Bhatts' arrest.
And this is the part most people miss... The police stated that the case is centered around a proposed biopic on Dr. Murdia's late wife. Dr. Murdia, the owner of Indira IVF Hospital, claims he was promised earnings of Rs 200 crore, which never materialized. Consequently, he filed a complaint at the Bhopalpura police station in Udaipur, leading to an FIR for cheating and other offenses.
Vikram and Shwetambari Bhatt were apprehended in Mumbai on December 7 and presented before a Udaipur court on December 9 after Rajasthan Police secured a transit remand. Following initial police custody, the couple was placed in judicial custody for 14 days.
The case gained prominence when Rajasthan Police detained the couple in Mumbai based on the allegations of cheating. Investigators later clarified that the couple was required for detailed questioning regarding alleged financial irregularities and the misuse of invested funds. An FIR has been registered at the Bhopalpura police station in Udaipur under sections related to cheating and other applicable offenses. Authorities are currently scrutinizing bank transactions, production agreements, and communication records linked to the alleged fraud.
